Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in Sacramento County

ITS working to re-route traffic. Intelligent Transportation Systems or ITS is a collection of technologies, including information processing, communications, controls, and electronics that collects and transmits information about traffic conditions to one central location known in the County of Sacramento as the Traffic Operations Center (TOC).  Once received in the TOC, Traffic Engineers can make adjustments to traffic signals in response to current conditions.

New applications and technologies are being developed every day. Better-known examples of ITS technologies include:

  • On-board navigation systems
  • Crash notification systems
  • Electronic payment systems
  • Roadbed sensors
  • Traffic video/control technologies
  • Weather information services
  • Variable message signs
  • Fleet tracking and weigh in-motion technologies

When integrated into the transportation system infrastructure, and in vehicles themselves, these technologies help monitor and manage traffic flow, reduce congestion, provide alternate routes to travelers, enhance productivity, and save lives, time and money.

ITS Capabilities

Changeable Messaging Sign In addition to collecting and transmitting information to a central location such as a Traffic Operations Center, ITS alerts agencies and motorists to delays in the form of changeable message signs, so travelers can change their plans to maximize convenience and reduce strain on the system.  ITS also decreases congestion by reducing the number of traffic incident, clearing them more quickly when they occur, and rerouting traffic.  Through automated tracking, dispatch and weigh-in-motion systems ITS can improve the productivity of commercial transit.  This is just a brief description of the benefits and capabilities of intelligent transportation technologies.

Standards

Traffic Signal The Intelligent Transportation System used by the TOC proposed by the Sacramento ITS Development Partnership is consistent with National ITS standards and architecture.  Click here for more information about the National ITS Architecture.  If you would like more information about the national standards click here.
