American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan

In January 2005, the Board of Supervisors approved the Sacramento County ADA-Plan which details plans to increase unincorporated area street and road accessibility for all persons - including those with disabilities. The ADA is a Federal law which requires public entities to develop plans to provide accessibility along roadways. The County plan identifies and prioritizes disabled access projects such as curb ramps and sidewalks, estimates project costs, highlights an implementation schedule and funding strategy, and develops grievance and monitoring programs. The plan includes over 1,800 project locations that will make sidewalks safer and more accessible. The projects will be scheduled over a 15-20 year period at an estimated cost of $68 million.

ADA related requirements are now incorporated into new roadway projects whenever possible. In addition, Design Standards for curb, gutter and sidewalk related Capital Improvement projects now include ADA compliant elements such as handicapped ramps and audible pedestrian signals.

Partners: County staff worked with the ACB Capital Chapter of the California Council of the Blind (CCB), the River City chapter of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), Friends of Macular Degeneration and California Disability Rights to review and develop the ADA-Plan.
